Early Christmas Presents Early Christmas Presents Two Football Association of Wales Referees' Lee Evans and Huw Jones have received an early Christmas present with confirmation of the UEFA Referees Categories for the second half of the season 2009-2010.

Both referees have been promoted up a Category in the UEFA rankings with Evans going up from Category 3 to Category 2, becoming Wales' highest ranked FIFA Official and Jones going up from Category 4 to Category 3. The achievement of Jones from Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant is fantastic as he is just completing his first year as a FIFA Referee, having benefitted when Wales received an extra Refereeing place in January 2009. Wales' two other FIFA referees Ceri Richards (Llanelli) and Mark Whitby (Swansea) remain as Category 3 Referees, although both continue to receive excellent marks and feedback when on International duty.

The 2010 calendar year will be the last year for the long-serving Richards on the FIFA list as he will have to step down from the FIFA panel at the age of 45. His service for the FAW on the International list since he was promoted to it in 1994 has been superb and it is excellent that he will be representing Wales for one more year on the International stage. When he does step down from the FIFA list, it will open the door for another Welsh Referee, who will have the opportunity for nomination to the FIFA panel in 2011.

This has been the case this season with the new list of FIFA Assistant Referees. Caldicot's Phil Bates, who has served the FIFA panel extremely well over a number of years, has stepped down having reached the age of 45 and Abertillery's young assistant, Mark Dyson will become the eighth Welsh FIFA Assistant Referee in 2010.

Match A Match Fee PDF Print E-mail

On behalf of Pembrokeshire Referees’ Society, with an endorsement from the Referee’s Association of Wales I write to invite members of your society to join with us in a fund raising endeavour, named MATCH A MATCH FEE.

Members from Pembrokeshire are willing to donate a match fee (£20) from a local league fixture and match this by undertaking an as of yet decided sponsored activity; the profits from our efforts will be donated to the Noah’s Ark Appeal for the Children’s Hospital of Wales.  Whilst being of an obvious benefit to our intended recipients, the aim is also to raise the profile of the Referee’s Association of Wales as it nears the kick off of its new identity.

Can your members buy into this?  As the Children’s Hospital for Wales is a recognised charity in the principality, it is our hope you will give it your consideration and ultimately support.  If it is your wish to join the MATCH A MATCH FEE fundraising effort please could one member of your society contact me, from which further discussions can begin?

In offering to co-ordinate this on behalf of the Referee’s Association of Wales and Pembrokeshire Society I welcome any support and guidance from fellow members.  In the hope of hearing back from you in the very near future

Yours in sport

Jonathan Twigg
